In most hydroelectric and some wind powered battery based generating systems it is necessary to keep the charging source loaded at all times. To do that you will need a diversion load unit to heat either air or water and a control unit. The control unit diverts excess power to the load unit when the voltage has reached the set point. There are two basic types of control units. PWM controllers such as the Xantrex C40 and C60 vary the amount of power diverted to keep the voltage constant. Switch type controllers function by turning the full load on and off as needed. Both types of controllers generate electrical noise, so consult us before making a decision. Several other control schemes exist for hydroelectric systems such as, a voltage controlled switch to turn on and off a motorized gate valve. When sizing a PWM controller, the controller should be at least 25 % larger than the load for better reliability. We sell a full line of charge controllers, relays, water and air diversion loads and misc.
Industrial Quality Air Heating Diversion Load Units
These resistive loads are built for 100 % duty cycle in a 50 C ambient without a fan at the rated watts below at the usual equalization voltage commonly found in lead acid battery based systems. At normal charging voltage the amperage will be 5 to 10% less than listed and the watts will be 10 to 15% lower than listed…so, oversize the load unit a little when using the load unit as a hydro or wind diversion load. When using as a dump load to cycle a NiCad battery or UPS battery, the amperage will be 20% less than listed. They must be mounted on a metal or masonry wall or other suitable support oriented as listed for height and width with suitable fireproofing as needed. They also must be kept free and clear of combustible materials or falling debris. This is your responsibility. These units can be a significant source of heat and are dangerous in the wrong hands. We assume no responsibility, use at your own risk. This is an industrial grade product and is not U.L. listed. Consult the web for heavier units and other voltages not listed here. The smaller units can be built and shipped in a few days, allow extra time for the larger ones.
